Dear Sadh Sangat ji,
My name is Manbeena Kaur , and I am a former elementary school teacher from Texas . Currently, I am the Education Director for the Sikh Coalition. As you know, after 9/11 Sikhs were the object of bias incidents, discrimination, and hate crimes because of their external appearance. Our organization was born out of a need to advocate for this group and protect their civil rights. Today, I am in charge of educating the greater public on who Sikhs are and to foster an appreciation for Sikhs in the community. To make this vision a reality, we conduct educational presentations on Sikh Awareness in elementary, middle, and high schools across the country. In addition to several nationwide educational initiatives, we also work with various states to make sure Sikhism is incorporated into the Social Studies state standards. The Court, without requiring France to respond to Jasvir Singh’s legal arguments, has following the decision it made last November in the Islamic headscarf physical education cases (which pre-dated the 2004 law), by ruling that the ban on turbans is a proportionate response to the aims of protection of the rights and freedoms of others and the protection of public order.
