3rd Sikh Day Parade & Gurpurb Prayers in Houston TX

img_0293.JPGOne of the newest religions of the world, Sikhism, was founded about 500 years ago by the first of the ten Gurus of the Sikhs, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji (1469 – 1539 AD). Of the 25 million Sikh, about 20 million live in India, and an estimated 5 million are live across the world in more than 100 countries. The “3rd Sikh Day Parade for World Peace” held on October 17, 2009 marked the 540th birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Mr. Hira Singh Chamdal, and the Secretary, Dr.Tejendra Singh Gill (University of Houston) of Gurdwara Sahib of SW Houston, began filing applications for various permits with the City of Houston and the Mayor’s Office well ahead of time. Public functions of this nature involve a great deal of planning and are an expensive proposition. It was a clear sunny day, and the stage was all set in Jones Plaza for the Sikh community of Greater Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, Beaumont, Bay Town, and Galveston to gather and participate in the religious festivities. More than 1200 people, including men, women and children, participated in the celebrations. Continue Reading…
